I can ramble on about this to an uninterested readership... or I can provide the trailer from Youtube and let it speak for itself. You will be wowed.
Special thanks to my friend Steve who bought this movie on ebay just so we could watch it together. I think he discovered it as well. To this, I give him full credit.

Dolly Dearest

What a treasure trove Netflix Instant provides. This is another one of those VHS covers that haunted me as a little boy when we used to go to Pyramid Video to rent movies.
Nothing remarkable about it, other than it supposedly takes place in Mexico surrounding an American family that moves there. Interestingly, the few people who die in the movie are the Mexicans. This must have been before the politically-correct movement...?
Friday the 13th Part 2 Part 2
Part 2 because I am bringing it up again and also poking fun at how many Parts there are to this franchise of horror films.
I bought a bootleg copy of this in China and happened to pack it with me when Shawna and I went to Southeast Asia. We got around to watching it under the veil of a mosquito net in a tree bungalow in Ban Lung, Cambodia.
Not extremely worth mentioning, but then I guess it goes along with the spirit of this blog: a bunch of bullshit semi-related to horror films.
It is, however, an unlikely combination of things: Cambodia, jungle, Jason Vorhees. Which of these doesn't belong?

Lord of Illusions (1995)

When I was a boy, my friend Brian told me this was the scariest movie he had ever seen.
Years upon years later, I finally watched it. The week before last. Shawna, Russ, and I were mining Netflix Instant through the dredges of horror films they have available. Upon much urge, I finally convinced the other two that this might be a worthwhile watch. The selling point to them was that it was about a satanic cult and magic, the former being attractive to Russ, and the latter to Shawna's liking.
Indeed it was entertaining, of course, for a seasoned audience. Did I even need a caveat? I don't think my mom is going to watch it anytime soon...
Anyhow there are a couple things I'd like to note.
1) With some pretty gruesome imagery present in this film it is a wonder Brian was able to stomach it at a young age. That was likely a film that the family sat down together to watch (?)
2) Some really great quotes in that movie:
a) "I was born to murder the world."
b) "What are you?"
"A man who wanted to become a god... but changed his mind."
That second quote I posted on Facebook and, incidentally, my mom "liked" it.

Friday the 13th Part 2
I watched this with Brian J. during a Friday the 13th marathon on cable TV. We used to look forward to horror movie marathons during particular times of the year (such as Halloween or a Friday the 13th). At least I looked forward to them. Not only did we not have cable at home, but I wasn't allowed to watch these kinds of movies. At Brian's house we sat up late in the living room on separate couches and snuggled in blankets and watched this movie and probably ate food. Nothing stands out about this installment in particular, except Jason Vorhees is actually the killer in this movie and not his mother (from the very first one). And he has not yet graduated to the universally known hockey mask yet, and is only using a white cloth over his head like a Klan member. Hmm.Recently I acquired the original VHS jacket-cover for this film. Now I sort of have a collection going of Friday the 13th VHS jacket covers. I so far have "Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan" and of course "Friday the 13th, the Final Chapter" which is my favorite in the series. There is something I like about these old VHS boxes. They are certainly a thing of the past. I always feel embarrassed buying these movies. Yesterday I was at Value Village of Hwy 99 in Tigard, Oregon looking for tacky Christmas wear for my company holiday party. Well, I couldn't find any xmas sweaters. Not one. Not even a bad one that I wouldn't wear. For there are bad ones I would wear as a joke and then even worse ones that I couldn't wear even if it was for a joke. Anyway, I found a nice little neck tie with the holiday theme running through it and happened to stroll by the VHS section and saw this movie on the shelf.
Now I have another box cover to add to my collection. My collection has no purpose or meaning.

Child's Play

This movie is neither good, nor remotely frightening.
And enjoy this new anecdote.
I was first introduced to the Child's Play series from Seth who was borderline obsessed with it when we were young. Not only did I watch the first one with Seth at his house across the prairie from me, but we also rented Child's Play 2 together at my house one night for a sleepover after a middle school Halloween dance where we had both spent the night exhilarated and awkwardly slow dancing with girls in our small middle school classes and head-banging to other, more fast-paced songs, jacking handfuls of Starburst and Jolly Rancher candies from the table being held by Student Council.
Seth was Chucky for Halloween one year when he and I ingeniously decided to go trick-or-treating during the day and night so we could score double the amount of free candy. We were in Seth's aunt's neighborhood when he fell quite ill and began crying, the brown marker dots he put on his cheeks to represent freckles starting to stream with his tears. We were in middle school then; I dressed up as Alex, the narrator from "A Clockwork Orange," in white with Seth's jockstrap over my pants.
